Excerpts from the 1997 memoirs of

I got down with the Cripple Aritries so my Daughter Judy Simmons come from Florida and got me so I stay with my son law Charles Chastain & daughter Layuna I stay at night with my daughter Layuna at night and my daughter Judy at day time so I suffed so bad I thought I was going to die ever day so my son law had order as lots of artries medicine so he come in and put artries medicine on my leg so I would go to sleep then so my daughter Layuna tuck me to a healing service down in Florida so they pray and lots pray. I got heal my Hand was draw to-gether I could not open them till I got heal and my hand come open. 

They got good churches here I go to the Horse Creek Holyness but I like to go to the Crawfish Holyness Church I used to go to the Gregory Branch Holyness Church but move away from Horse Creek don’t go any more I like to go to the Baptist at Horse Creek because my mother went there for about 30 years are more they sure had a good preacher there his name was Dennis Rush he was like a Father to me he help me when I need help he sure was a good Preacher. 

We did not have any money for awhile so my husband went to work in the Mines and he got us some money then after we were married for one years at the date I had one child born her name was Verna Lay and about two years later we had a son Richard then I had some more children . . . . Me and my husband got to having trouble over women so I found out he was out with some one else but he kept me a hired girl while we live in Lynch Ky 

We live with Mother & Daddy for awhile then moved out down from Mother in a Two room house my parent give me all my Furnice to us old table & old stove 4 cap on it it burnt coal she give us our cook vessel also dishes quilt home made ever thing we used for a while. 

I grow up on Greazy Creek but I went to school till I was 17 years old I Past the 8 grade they never had any hight school then so I never got any hight schooling but I fine me a husband when I was 17 years old and married him. 

I remember living in a log cabin when I was about 6 year old with my Daddy & Mother. Anderson Downey and Lizzie Downy was my parent. I started to school when I was six years old at the old Horse Creek School. I don’t remember my teacher then but as I grow up I had different teacher Levi Lewis & Ezra Webb. They was other Teacher but I forget.
